14-Day Luxury Itinerary for Tonga
For the discerning traveller who wants to get off the beaten track and discover the real South Pacific, Tonga is the ideal destination. Forget about the manicured resorts of Fiji or Tahiti, this is the real deal where you’ll be staying on pristine islands in traditionally thatched fales (beach huts) with few modern comforts (you can forget about the WiFi). You’ll have access to exclusive activities, like swimming with majestic humpback whales, fishing for exciting game species, and sailing remarkably tranquil yachting grounds. That’s not to say you won’t get your downtime, where a hammock on a secluded beach is never too far away… We’ll go through a spectacular way to see Tonga in two weeks in this Tonga luxury itinerary for 14 days.

How to Get Around Tonga in Two Weeks
The itinerary below has you visiting three of Tonga’s major island groups. With that, you’ll need to do some travelling over land and water. While we give some tips in the itinerary, here is an overview of how to get around Tonga in two weeks.
Road Transport in Tonga
Upon arrival to each island group in Tonga, accommodations typically offer airport transfers or car rental companies can deliver vehicles to the airport. Tongatapu and Vava’u also have taxis. Check out How to Get an Airport Transfer in Tonga for more on the subject.
For travelling on each of the islands, car hire offers the most flexibility, convenience and privacy. Get advice on car hire from What You Need to Hire a Car in Tonga. Alternatively, this itinerary is doable with a mix of taxis (see The Complete Guide to Taxis in Tonga), hiring private drivers (see How to Hire a Driver in Tonga for more advice), as well as taking guided tours such as the 10 Best Sightseeing Tours in Tonga.
Overwater Transport in Tonga
In this itinerary, we mostly recommend taking domestic flights between the island groups, which is the fastest and most convenient for most travellers – see Domestic Flights in Tonga: A Guide to Interisland Flights. Note that no flights operate on a Sunday and are prone to cancellations due to bad weather; that’s why this itinerary allows for extra days at each destination, as well as leaves a day between domestic and international flights.
For getting to island resorts, resorts offer their own boat transfers, which need to be arranged before arrival. Otherwise, check out A Guide to Boat Transfers & Water Taxis in Tonga for alternatives.
For all of your transport options across the islands, check out our Tonga Transport Guide: 15 Best Ways to Get Around Tonga.

Ha’apai’s 62 breathtaking islands are where you’ll enjoy a classic South Seas experience of white sandy shores, tranquil turquoise waters and swaying palms. The resorts here are small and mostly revolve around sustainable living. Again, there are no five-star resorts but here are the next best options…

Days 4-7 – Explore Ha’apai
Ha’apai is a place to disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself. This is easy to do so through island massages and yoga sessions. However, if you’re feeling more active, you’ll have another chance to swim with humpback whales (July-October). Ha’apai’s sheltered lagoons also provide an opportunity to kitesurf or kayak from your resort.
Luxury Activities in Ha’apai
- Swim with gorgeous humpback whales
- Explore the islands on horseback
- Indulge in an island massage
- Rejuvenate the body, mind and soul in a yoga session
- Tackle game fish on a fishing charter
- Get the castaway experience on a private island day trip
- Be treated to dinner on the beach
- Hit Tonga’s famous kitesurfing spot
- Learn how to sail
- Scuba dive among untouched coral.
For more details on each experience, see the 10 Best Luxury Experiences in Ha’apai.
Dining Recommendations
For something a little different from dining at your resort, it’s well worth making your way to the sandy south of Lifuka Island to Leleno ki Moana (Hihifo) for beachfront dining on impeccably presented plates. Otherwise, more recommendations can be found in The Food Guide to Ha’apai: Places to Eat & Food Tours.
Day 8 – Ha’apai to Vava’u (via Tongatapu)
Travel time: 20 mins – 1 hr Ha’apai airport transfer + 2 hours flight via Tongatapu + 20 mins – 1 hr Vava’u airport transfer.
Arrange with your accommodation provider to transfer you to Salote Pilolevu Airport on Lifuka Island where you’ll catch a flight to your next amazing destination, Vava’u.
Vava’u is a collection of around 61 islands providing accommodation and experiences that are best described as “rugged luxury”. You could be spending your time here staying in a fale of a remote boutique resort or even treating yourself to a multi-day stay sailing adventure. After all, Vava’u is one of the best sailing grounds in the South Pacific!
Luxury Accommodation in Vava’u
- The Reef Resort
- Mandala Resort
- Wolfgramm Beachfront

Closer to the town of Neiafu, Bellavista Cafe & Restaurant (Guttenbeil Plaza) boasts sumptuous Italian cuisine with unbeatable harbour views. See the 15 Best Cafes & Restaurants in Vava’u to learn more.
Days 9-12 – Explore Vava’u
The question is, what is there not to do in Vava’u?! You’ll find a lot more experiences and variety in this island group than what you’ve seen on Tonga’s other islands. There’s a wide range of whale swimming tours, fishing charters, scenic cruises, snorkelling tours, scuba diving excursions and more! Otherwise, those visiting Neiafu can take advantage of its dining scene with the likes of The Harbourview (Toula) serving European-inspired cuisine with views to justify the name. We also highly recommend the rustic Basque Tavern (Fatafehi Road) for its tapas dining. For anything we’ve missed, you’ll likely find it in The Food Guide to Vava’u: Places to Eat & Food Tours.
Day 13 – Vava’u to Nuku’alofa
Travel time: 20 mins – 1 hr Vava’u airport transfer + 1 hour flight + 30 mins airport transfer.
It’s time to leave your island paradise behind, but why leave a day ahead of your scheduled flight out of Tonga? We recommend it because flights are frequently cancelled arriving and landing in Vava’u if the weather is bad and/or the visibility is low.
Arrange with your resort to transport you back to Lupepauʻu Airport where you’ll catch your flight over the scattering of islands decorating the ocean! You’ll land at Fua’amotu Airport where you can arrange for your accommodation to transfer you to your four-star hotel or lodge in Nuku’alofa.
Spend your last evening dining in one of the city’s elegant restaurants and toast to two weeks well-spent in Tonga.

Day 14 – Explore Nuku’alofa + Departure
Travel time: 30 mins.
