Road Transport in Tonga

Travel time: Direct international flight to Vava’u + 15 mins airport transfer. International flight to Tongatapu + 5 mins terminal transfer + 1 hr flight + 15 mins airport transfer (see Tonga Travel Times & Distances).
Welcome to Tonga! We recommend starting your foodie vacation off in the island group of Vava’u, which has some international connections, especially from Fiji. Otherwise, take an international flight to Tongatapu and then a domestic flight to Vava’u.
Vava’u is a huge producer of tropical crops, from vanilla to kava, so there are lots of gastronomical activities to experience here. Travel time: 40 mins return to ‘Ene ‘io, 16 mins return vanilla tour, 2 hrs sightseeing, etc. (see The Driving Times & Distances in Tonga).
Neiafu makes a great base for doing some of Vava’u’s top food-related activities. One of which is the ‘Ene’io Botanical Garden, which is not just a botanist’s dream but provides all sorts of interesting insight into the food grown on the islands. They even sell their own natural health foods. Travel time: 20 mins – 1 hr airport transfer + 1 hr flight + 30 mins Nuku’alofa airport transfer.
To allow a bit of contingency time in case flights are cancelled out of Vava’u (which is known to happen… a lot!), we recommend leaving Vava’u for the mainland midway into your itinerary. Besides, it also means that you’ll be heading to the nation’s capital, Nuku’alofa, which is a foodie destination in itself!
Arrange with your Vava’u accommodation for a transfer to Lupepau’u Airport then, on arrival on Tongatapu, either arrange for your accommodation to transfer you to Nuku’alofa or get a taxi.
