Where to Shop in Tonga
Forget the superficial shopping mall experience, shopping in Tonga is a whirlwind of unique handicrafts strewn across every available space, where you can watch artisans make their wares as you meander between market stalls or visit the boutique factories and gift shops of locally-made products. Although the shopping scene in Tonga isn’t huge, the markets are some of the most impressive in the South Pacific; sure to satisfy any shop-o-lic on holiday.

The Best Places to Go Shopping in Tonga
A vibrant shopping scene awaits in Tonga with a splattering of boutiques, markets and fashion stores in the small capital Nuku’alofa. The cosmopolitan vibe doesn’t exactly extend to Tonga’s less-developed islands, however, but you will find the odd market for your souvenir fix.
Shopping in Nuku’alofa
By far Tonga’s best place for some retail therapy, Nuku’alofa offers an array of boutiques, gift shops and the Talamahu Market in and around the city centre. The market is an extravaganza of local crafts, clothing, art, jewellery, food and produce. Artisanal food and spa products also have their headquarters here in the capital. See the “The Best Shops in Tonga” section below to sift through your options, or head to 10 Best Shops to Buy Souvenirs in Tonga where most listings are based in Nuku’alofa.
Shopping in Neiafu
Although much much smaller than Nuku’alofa, Neiafu‘s ‘Utukalongalu Market and the odd gift/handicraft store in town give travellers some shopping options while visiting Vava’u. Again, see the “The Best Shops in Tonga” section below for the limited shops in Vava’u.
Shopping at Fua’amotu International Airport
Save some Pa’anga to spend at the Arrivals and Departures Lounges of Faleolo International Airport. A couple of stores in the Departures Lounge sell local arts, crafts and apparel from some of Tonga’s brands, while both the Arrivals and Departures areas have duty-free shops selling alcohol. It’s a good way to pass the time while waiting for your flight.
