Accommodations in Ha’apai for Families

Ha’apai isn’t your island destination of polished five-star resorts. It’s the real deal. The island group offers an authentic island retreat away from the stresses of modern-day life, making it effortless to reconnect as a family. Out of the 62 islands of the group, 45 of which are uninhabited, families have a choice to stay on three main islands: Lifuka, Foa and Uoleva. All of the resorts and guesthouses on these islands offer transfers from the wharf/airport, as well as some sort of catering. Compare your options with this list of the best family accommodations in Ha’apai!

Note that Tonga is an ever-evolving country and with that, accommodations can change offerings with little notice. Although we try to keep our listing up-to-date, feel free to reach out if you have any updates.

1. Matafonua Lodge

If upmarket were a thing in Tonga, then this would be it. Matafonua Lodge is made up of cute free-standing elevated fales among the beach vegetation, some of which are the “Family Fales”, which include a continental breakfast and free use of kayaks, bicycles and the treehouse playground. Families will need to use the lavishly designed shared shower and bathrooms with a rainfall head shower. The on-site restaurant with an a la carte menu means you can have whatever you feel like (unlike many other resorts in Ha’apai which set menus). As for activities, you are spoiled for the choice to do as much or as little as you want between horse riding and whale swimming. 2. Serenity Beaches Resort

Located on the uninhabited island of Uoleva, Serenity Beaches Resort is a place to get away from it all. Stay in one of their open-air fales (bungalows) nestled in beachfront bush where parents sleep in the queen bed on the ground floor, while kids love the loft room above! Alternatively, stay in one of the larger fully enclosed fales with sleeping arrangements for families of three or four. Whatever you choose, kids will enjoy the novelty of an open-air garden shower, while parents will appreciate that meals can be taken care of in the homely communal fale. As for experiences, there’s whale watching/swimming in the whale season (July-October), snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding with free use of gear.
